Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve

The Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve is a butterfly conservation and education center under the Environmental Association, dedicated to promoting the importance of butterfly ecological conservation.  It is located about 2 kilometers from Tai Po town centre and a renowned area for butterflies watching in Hong Kong and Asia.

Introduction

The Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve is located in the Fung Yuen Valley, near the northern part of Fung Yuen Lau Wai, covering an area of approximately 42 hectares. The conservation area features diverse habitats that provide natural environments for various butterfly species and other wildlife. There are walking trails within the area, allowing visitors to explore different ecosystems; along these trails, educational signage offers information about butterflies and their ecosystems. This area is also a popular butterfly watching spot for nature enthusiasts and ecological photographers.

​Establishment
  • In 1980, 42 hectares of land in Fung Yuen was listed as a “Site of Special Scientific Interest”, with high conservation value.

  • Under the New Nature Conservation Policy in 2004, Fung Yuen was assessed a priority conservation site.

  • Over 200 species of butterflies was recorded in Fung Yuen, which accounts for about 90% of butterfly species in Hong Kong.

  • Aristolochia acuminata and Illigera celebica are host plants for the larvae of Common Birdwing (Troides helena) and White Dragontail (Lamproptera curius). Both plants can be found in Fung Yuen and are protected by the Forests and Countryside Ordinance.

  • Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve was established by Environmental Association Limited (registered charity) in 2005.

  • In November 2005, Environmental Association Limited was supported by the Environment and Conservation Fund to initiate a
    Management Agreements Scheme at the sites of special scientific value in Fung Yuen. Until 2021, Management
    Agreements Scheme is now supported by the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme.

​Vision and Goals
  • To enhance the ecological value of the private land at Fung Yuen.

  • To manage the private land of Fung Yuen Valley Site of Special Scientific Interest.

  • To monitor ecological environment of Fung Yuen and adjacent area.

  • To promote education of ecological and rural culture conservation.

  • Use Fung Yuen Village as a demonstration of environmental village, it aims to enhance the interrelationship of the local economy, the community and the environment in order to achieve the conservation objectives.

  • To promote environmental lifestyle, for example, waste reduction, recycling and renewable energy.

  • To coordinate with the Hong Kong Government’s environmental policies and measures.
