The 21st Hong Kong Butterfly Race and Photography Contest 2025

The theme of the "21st Hong Kong Butterfly Race 2025" organized by the Environmental Protection Association's "Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve" is "Appreciate the Ecosystem, Protect the Habitat". The purpose of this event is to allow citizens to learn about butterflies, cultivate appreciation and care for our ecosystem, and thus awaken everyone's responsibility to conserve the ecological environment. The Butterfly Race has a "Best New-Observer" award to encourage more beginners to participate in the competition to learn about butterflies. This year, there is also a "Butterfly Detective Team" to allow parents and children to learn to cherish and conserve natural ecology through an interesting two-day parent-child experience activity.

All funds raised from the competition will be used for ecological conservation at the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, making a contribution to Hong Kong's ecological conservation and adding special significance to the competition.

A. Competition groups

Number of participants: 3-4 people per team (Open Group, College Group, and Primary and Secondary School Student Group)
Registration donation (minimum donation amount): $300

Registration Deadline: June 29, 2025

Date of Race: July 13, 2025 (Sunday)
Time: 9:00am-5:30pm (Open Group and College Group); 9:00am-12:30pm (Elementary and Secondary School Group)
Competition location: All over Hong Kong (Open Group and College Group); Fengyuan Butterfly Conservation Area (Primary and Secondary School Student Group)

Competition format: Scoring is based on the number and rarity of butterfly species recorded during the competition.

B. Prizes

Each category will have a champion, a runner-up and a third place winner, details are as follows:

 

Champion: JOBY Compact Light (JB01760-BWW) (worth HK$ 630)

+ Supermarket cash voucher HK$1000

Runner-up: Manfrotto Universal Smartphone Clamp (MTWISTGRIP) (worth HK$ 490)

C. How to participate

Please complete the online registration form

Upon successful admission, please pay the application fee by cheque payable to "Environmental Association Ltd." within one week after receiving the notification and mail or deliver in person to Fung Yuen Butterfly Nature and Cultural Education Centre, 150 Fung Yuen Village, Ting Kok Road, Tai Po. All proceeds will be used for conservation purposes.

D. Contest Instructions

  • As the conservation area is located in a rural environment, the route is somewhat difficult. Therefore, this activity is not suitable for people with limited mobility or those using wheelchairs. Please note.

  • Participants will receive a "Friends of the Environmental Protection Association" membership valid until December 31, 2026. Members can visit the Fengyuan Butterfly Conservation Area as many times as they want during opening hours.

  • Each participant who completes the activity will receive a certificate issued by the Environmental Protection Association.

  • Some activities involve outdoor activities. Participants are requested to purchase the necessary insurance by themselves.

  • If the Hong Kong Observatory issues a "Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 or above" or a "Red or Black Rainstorm Warning" two hours before the start of an event: The event will be cancelled on that day; if the Hong Kong Observatory issues a "Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 or above" or a "Red or Black Rainstorm Warning" within two hours before the start of an event and after the start of the event, the Association's temporary notification will prevail.

人數：每個家庭3-4人
活動捐款金額: 港幣500元或以上/3-4人家庭 (所有收益將撥作自然保育用途)
早鳥優惠：2025年6月15日或之前報名，港幣400元或以上🌟
截止報名日期：2025年6月26日 (先報先得，額滿即止)

  • 每位完成活動之參加者，均獲「環保協進會」頒發之證書一張及香港野外觀蝶圖冊 (第二版) 一本。

D. Contest Instructions

  • 因保育區屬郊外環境，途中路線有一定難度，因此本活動不適合行動不便或使用輪椅人士，敬請留意。

  • 有關活動參加者需為同一家庭之成員，小童年齡需為6-12歲及由其家長/監護人陪同。

  • 部分環節涉及戶外活動，參加人士請自行購買所需保險。

  • 如天文台於活動開始兩小時前發出「三號或以上熱帶氣旋警告信號」或「紅色、黑色暴雨警告」： 當日活動將會取消；如天文台於活動開始前兩小時內及活動開始後發出「三號或以上熱帶氣旋警告信號」或「紅色、黑色暴雨警告」，則以本會臨時通知為準。

The 21th Hong Kong Butterfly Photo Contest 2025

The 21st Hong Kong Butterfly Photography Contest 2025, organized by the Fung Yuen Butterfly Conservation Zone of the Environmental Protection Association, is themed "Appreciate Ecology and Protect Habitat". The purpose is to allow the public to learn about butterflies and use photos to show the natural beauty of butterflies at any stage and in their habitats, so as to cultivate appreciation and care for natural ecology, and thus awaken everyone's responsibility to conserve the ecological environment.

C. How to participate

After completing and submitting the online form, please email up to 2 entries (file name is "Entry Photo Number") to info@fungyuen.org. Please indicate "Entry for the 21st Hong Kong Butterfly Photo Contest 2025" in the email subject and include the entry photo number.

 

 

 

 

Photo ID:

Please use the first 4 digits of your Hong Kong Identity Card number followed by your English surname as the photo number. For example, if your Hong Kong Identity Card number is D1234567 (8) Chan Tai Man, your photo number would be: D123Chan_1 (or 2).

 

D. Competition Rules:

  • Participants are required to hold a Hong Kong Identity Card.

  • The registration deadline for the competition is 23:59 on November 30, 2025 (Sunday). Late registrations will not be considered.

  • Photos may show butterflies at any stage of their life cycle (except specimens).

  • Each participant can submit up to 2 entries. Those who fail to submit more will be disqualified.

  • The photos must be taken by the entrants themselves in Hong Kong in 2025, and information such as the date, time and location of the shooting must be provided.

  • Photos submitted by email must be in JPEG format (RAW files are not required for the time being) and the file size must be less than 10MB.

  • Entries that have been entered into other public competitions and won awards will not be accepted for entry.

  • The judges will assess the entries based on the following criteria: content (40%), composition (30%) and technique (30%).

  • After the shortlisted works are selected, the Association may require participants to submit the RAW files or original files of the shortlisted photos.

  • The Association supports natural ecological photography. If any entry is found to have used bad photography techniques (such as setting bait, capturing, raising, etc.), it will be disqualified from the competition.

  • In case of any disputes, the Environmental Protection Association reserves the right to make the final decision.
